GED® and Basic Skills

What is the GED® ?

The GED® (General Educational Development® ) is designed to measure the skills and concepts generally associated with four years of regular high school instruction. The GED® is a battery of five tests which can be administered only through an official GED® Testing Center. The GED® provides an opportunity to earn a high school equivalency diploma in an alternative environment, a credential recognized as a key to educational and financial advancement.

The five tests covered in the GED® are:

Mathematics

Language Arts—Writing

Language Arts– Reading

Science

Social Studies

Your Success is Our Goal

We strive to encourage, support, and guide each student that enters our program. We realize the accomplishment of obtaining the GED® is often a milestone, a door into endless possibilities of greatness for our students and their families. Regardless of age, economic status, nationality, disability, race, or background, every student has the potential of individual success.

Our GED® preparation classes are organized to strengthen the weak subject areas of each student with tutors, and assignments. Monitoring the individual progress of each student is done through progressive testing from one level to the next.

Mission Statement

The mission of the Rutherford County Adult High School is to provide adult students with the opportunity to complete the requirements for a high school diploma in a flexible setting.

Vision

The vision of the Rutherford County Adult High School is a shared vision with the Rutherford County School System to provide students knowledge and skills to become lifelong learners who are able to adapt and successfully meet the challenges of the future.

History

The Rutherford County Adult High School was established during the 1994-1995 school year in the annex of Central Middle School. In 1995-1996 it relocated to the Adult Education Center in the McFadden Community Center. During the 1998-1999 school year, the entire Adult Education Center, including the Adult High School, moved to the newly remodeled facility at 502 Memorial Boulevard, which formerly housed the Rutherford County Board of Education. This was the first facility completely dedicated to housing only the Adult Education Program. In October 2005 the Adult Education Center (including the Adult High School) moved to its newly built facility at 2240-B Southpark Boulevard, next to the Rutherford County Board of Education.

The Adult High School provides a way for persons who dropped out of high school for various reasons to return and earn the credits they need for their high school diplomas. The State requires a student to complete a minimum 133 hours for a full credit and minimum 67 hours for a ½ credit. Students must enroll for at least ½ credit. The Adult High School offers students a chance to earn those credits at their own pace with a flexible schedule. The students must meet the graduation requirements for the year they originally began high school and must pass the State Gateway exams to receive a high school diploma, unless they have already met the Competency exam requirements that were in effect when they entered high school. Students must be at least 18 years of age and must have withdrawn from their regular high school program.

The Adult High School classroom is equipped with five student computers with internet accessibility to enhance student learning. However, lack of space, staff, and science labs limit the course options of the Adult High School. Listed below are the current course offerings:
